The Montreal International Musical Competition welcomes
the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal

Montreal, Monday, March 19, 2007 – André Bourbeau, President of the Montreal International Musical Competition, is proud to announce that the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal will be the official orchestra for the 2007 Voice Competition.

Conducted by Daniel Lipton, the Orchestre Métropolitain will accompany the twelve singers chosen to advance to the final round, which will be held on May 28, 29 and 30 in the Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts and the laureates at the gala concert, Friday June 1 at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Place des Arts.

“I am delighted that the Montreal International Musical Competition is now associated with the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal,” stated Mr. Bourbeau. The MIMC is today regarded as one of the country’s most important artistic events. When one thinks of the great renown of the jury members, of the prize money totaling nearly $100,000, and of the concert engagements offered to the winners, one can assert that nothing has been overlooked in the achievement of excellence for this competition. Likewise, for 25 years, the Orchestra has brightened the musical life of the city. The dedication and enthusiasm of its musicians, and of its conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, have been noted by all music lovers. We are proud to welcome this new partnership.”

Michelle Cormier, the Orchestra’s Chairman of the Board, is equally pleased. “We are obviously very proud to be associated with this major artistic event, the Montreal International Musical Competition. Our musicians have long experience with opera as well as having on many occasions shared the stage with highly acclaimed soloists. I am therefore confident that the partnership we have forged this year will be a lasting one, and that it will continue not only next year, with the significant involvement of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, but for many years in the future.

The MIMC, founded in 2002 at the initiative of Jeunesses Musicales Canada, has provided opportunities for many young artists to showcase their talent in major musical venues. The Competition also serves to underscore the richness of our artistic life, the tremendous vitality of our musical institutions and the value the various levels of government and corporations place on this initiative.

In endowing Canada’s artistic community with a competition on so high a level, the organizers are at the same time affirming the richness of our cultural life and its capacity to sustain a large-scale international event.

The 2007 MIMC, devoted this year to voice, will run from May 22 to June 1, playing host to the finest young singers from around the world. Ten days of pure musical magic!
