The Montreal International Musical
Competition (MIMC) was founded in 2002 at the initiative of the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada. From its very first
edition, dedicated to voice, the Competition has succeeded in
bringing together the ideal conditions to ensure the highest
possible level of artistry and an international reach as broad
as it is exceptional. Whether one looks at the international
calibre of its jury members, the substantial prizewinnings and
engagements it offers its laureates, or the enviable artistic
partnerships it has forged, clearly no effort has been spared to ensure the Competition's
rapid ascension to the highest rank of excellence.
Today, the MIMC has emerged as one of our country's great
artistic achievements. The establishment of such a high-level
competition in Canada makes a clear statement about our
country's rich cultural life and ability to host an
international event of this magnitude.
Since its inception, the Competition has not only provided a
spotlight for the world's most promising young talent in the
leading musical performance networks, it has also served to
showcase the intensity of our artistic life, the vitality of our
musical institutions and the values of our governments and
corporations that support this initiative.
In keeping with the great tradition of classical music, the
Competition aims to discover, reward and assist young singers,
violinists and pianists who distinguish themselves through the
mastery of their art. In so doing, the Competition strives to
foster the emergence of the world's greatest young talents and
promote their recognition and influence within the international
artistic community.
Following a preliminary step (based on audio recordings), the MIMC
consists of three rounds: quarter final, semi-final, and final. The three disciplines of the Competition, voice, violin and piano, are
featured on a rotating basis over a three-year cycle. Since May 7, 2004,
the Montreal International Musical Competition has been a member
of the World Federation of International Music Competitions.
Created in 1957, this federation, headquartered in Geneva,
represents a global network of internationally-recognized
musical institutions. Only those competitions that meet the
Federation's high musical and organization standards are
admitted to its membership. The MIMC has also joined the Alink-Argerich
Foundation since 2010.
