Muhai Tang
Muhai Tang is currently Chief Conductor of the Finnish
National Opera in Helsinki. This is his fifth position as
Principal Conductor, following successful tenures with the
Queensland Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of
Flanders, the China National Symphony Orchestra and the
Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon. It was recently announced that
he will take up the position of Künstlerischer Leiter und
Chefdirigent of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra effective August
2006, for a term of at least four years. In addition, he assumes
the title of Conductor Laureate and Artistic Advisor of the
Queensland Orchestra for the 2005-06 season. With the Finnish
National Opera, Muhai Tang has conducted numerous highly-praised
new productions, among them Turandot, Der Rosenkavalier, Pique
Dame ,Madama Butterfly, Tosca, La Rondine, Boris Godunov, The
Marriage of Figaro and La Traviata .This season, he conducts a
new production of Die Frau ohne Schatten ,The Barber of Seville
and Othello. For the ballet, he has also conducted acclaimed
productions of Sacre du Printemps and Swan Lake. After
completing his studies in Munich, Muhai Tang garnered
international recognition when he was invited by Herbert von
Karajan to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in its 1983
subscription series. This successful premier performance led to
repeat appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic and to
invitations from many of the world’s foremost orchestras,
including, among others, the London Philharmonic, Leipzig
Gewandhaus, Staatskapelle Dresden, Bayerischer Rundfunk,
Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Sydney
Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony. Of Muhai
Tang’s many recordings, the Guitar Concertos by Tan Dun and
Christopher Rouse with Sharon Isbin and the Gulbenkian Orchestra
under the Teldec label won a Grammy in 2002.
