Open to violinists of all
nationalities who were aged 29 years or less on January 1, 2006,
this 5th edition of the Montreal International Musical
Competition (MIMC) drew 211 applicants from 39 different
countries.
Three selection committees conducted blind auditions of the
recordings submitted by the candidates in order to determine the
semi-finalists. The musical programme for the preliminary round
included a piece by Bach, by Mozart and by Paganini.
The 24 candidates selected will perform before an international
panel of judges and the general public during the semi-final
round from May 24 to 27, 2006, at Montreal’s Centre
Pierre-Péladeau. In this round, each candidate will be required
to perform the musical programme, of a maximum duration of 60
minutes, entirely from memory, with the exception of the
Canadian compulsory work. Canadian composer Scott Good was
commissioned to write this five-minute piece by the MIMC
specifically for this 2006 Violin Edition, and the score was
sent to the semi-finalists in April.
The third and final round of the Competition will take place May
29 to 31 before the general public at Place des Arts’ Théâtre
Maisonneuve. Each of the nine finalists will be required to
perform a full concerto, accompanied for the occasion by the
Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. At the conclusion of this
round, the president of the jury will announce the names of the
2006 Violin Competition laureates.
The prizes will be awarded during the Gala Concert that
officially wraps up the 5th Edition of the Montreal
International Musical Competition. Held on June 2, 2006, at
Place des Arts, this prestigious event will showcase the talent
of some of the laureates of the Competition and the OSM
musicians in a concert developed by Competition officials.
The MIMC pays the travel costs of all semi-finalists and
organizes their lodging with host families for the duration of
the Competition.
