Oistrakh first studied with his father, the famous
violinist David Oistrakh, before pursuing his musical
training at the Moscow Conservatory, where he would
later become a faculty member, from 1949 to 1955. While
still a student, he won first prizes at the Budapest and
Poznan competitions. He has played with some of the
world's leading orchestras, led by such eminent
conductors as Otto Klemperer, Herbert von Karajan,
Eugene Ormandy, Carlo Maria Giulini, Georg Solti, Lorin
Maazel and David Oistrakh, who took up the baton instead
of his bow for the occasion. For 27 years, Mr. Oistrakh
gave numerous joint recitals with his father throughout
Europe and the United States, often doing the same with
his wife, pianist Natalia Zertsalova. A Fellow of the
Royal College of Music, Chairman of the Russian Chapter
of the European String Teachers Association, Honorary
Member of the Ysaye Foundation, Chairman of the César
Franck Foundation and professor at the Royal
Conservatory of Brussels, Mr. Oistrakh is a much
sought-after judge for many of the world's most
prestigious violin competitions. |
