PIANO 2024 – RULES
PIANO 2024 : INFORMATION, RULES and CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
From May 5 to 16, 2024, the piano takes centre stage at the Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM). This elite-level competition is aimed at pianists of the new generation who are destined for a professional career.
JURY
The jury for the Piano 2024 edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM) will be chaired by Zarin Mehta.
ELIGIBILITY
Young pianists of all nationalities, born between January 1, 1994, and December 31, 2007, may apply for the competition.
Please note that First Prize laureates from previous CMIM editions are not eligible to apply.
All selected competitors are required to be free of all engagements and available to perform in Montreal between May 5 and 16, 2024 (inclusive).
IMPORTANT DATES
Application period: September 1 to October 31, 2023
Invitations to the candidates: December 15, 2023
Submission of final programmes: January 19, 2024
Announcement of the candidates: February 1, 2024
Arrival of the candidates in Montreal: May 3, 2024
First Round: May 5 to 7, 2024
Semifinal: May 10 to 12, 2024
Final: May 15 and 16, 2024
PRIZES AND GRANTS
More than $150,000 CAD in prizes, awards, and grants will be awarded to the laureates and winners of the Piano 2024 edition, including:

ROUNDS
Repertoire selected for performance at the competition may include works recorded for the audition videos. No other duplication of repertoire is permitted during the competition rounds.
The jury will take into account the difficulty and artistic merit of the programs for each round.
The competitor must include at least one work from the Classical period and one work from the Romantic period in their programme for the First Round and/or Semifinal.
First Round – May 5, 6 and 7, 2024
The twenty-four (24) competitors selected for the First Round each present a programme of their choice, of 30 to 35 minutes of music in duration.
The ten (10) pianists who receive the highest scores from the international jury will advance to the Semifinal Round.
The fourteen (14) pianists who are not selected, will present their Semifinal programme in a concert hall in the greater Montreal region.
Semifinal Round – May 10,11 and 12, 2024
Part I – Recital
The (10) Semifinalists must each perform a program of 45 to 50 minutes of music.
The repertoire for the Semifinal recital must include a minimum of three (3) works, including the following elements:
- A complete sonata
- The imposed Canadian work
- Another work of the candidates’ choice
Part II – Chamber Music
The (10) Semifinalists must perform the first movement of a Piano Quartet with a CMIM ensemble (violin, viola, cello).
The candidate choose a work from the Piano 2024 selection.
The six (6) pianists who receive the highest scores from the international jury will advance to the Final Round.
Final – May 15 and 16, 2024
The six (6) finalists will present a major concerto from the standard repertoire for piano and orchestra. The choice of concerto is subject to approval from the Concours when the candidate’s participation is confirmed.
Each finalist is entitled to a 50-minute rehearsal with the conductor and piano, as well as a 50-minute rehearsal with conductor and orchestra.
The finalists perform their concerto with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, official orchestra of the CMIM.
